Nasdaq closes 0.7% lower as crypto stocks, BTC end Monday in the red

It was a day to forget for risk assets on Monday, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 closing 0.7% lower amid weak U.S. trading.

Oil prices eased a bit in the later afternoon hours to near $93 a barrel, but still firmly higher during the day as supply concerns still linger.

Bitcoin BTC$83,160.00 clawed back some ground from its session lows, changing hands near $82,700 recently.

Crypto-related stocks also nursed losses, with Securitize extending its decline to 14%.

Miners, whose fortunes are now tied as much to the AI infrastructure and data center buildout as to bitcoin mining, were broadly lower. Bitdeer (BTDR), Cipher Mining CIFR$11.08, TeraWulf WULF$12.90 and HIVE Digital HIVE$2.3650 all nursed losses of roughly 3% to 4%.

Tokenization firm Securitize extended losses to 14%

Securitize slides 10% as crypto stocks lose ground in holiday trading

A mid-day check on the U.S. stock market shows most crypto-related stocks nursing losses, with tokenization firm Securitize (SECZ) leading the selling.

The firm’s shares fell more than 10% by midday, giving up most of the recent bounce fueled influential investment research firm Citrini's report featuring the company as one of the biggest beneficiary of Wall Street bringing equities onto blockchain rails.

Elsewhere, digital custodian BitGo BTGO$7.1450 and institutional-focused exchange Bullish BLSH$32.07 both slipped about 3%. USDC issuer Circle CRCL$84.55, bitcoin holder Strategy MSTR$155.97 and ether treasury Bitmine BMNR$23.97 nursed modest declines. Coinbase COIN$180.68 held up with a 0.5% gain.

The weakness came as broader U.S. stocks struggled for direction. The S&P 500 was flat, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 fell 0.5%.

Trading is taking place against a holiday backdrop, with the U.S. bond market and Canadian stock exchanges closed for the day. U.S. stock markets remain open.

Markets start the week cautiously as U.S. dollar and bond yields stay firm

Markets are making a cautious start to the week, with bitcoin trading just above $83,000 and gold around $4,180 an ounce, both down roughly -0.5%. Tech futures are slightly lower, while WTI crude is edging higher above $92 a barrel. The dollar remains firm, with the DXY index above 102.4.

Wednesday’s U.S. inflation report is the week’s key macroeconomic event. Annual core inflation is expected to come in at 2.5%, while headline inflation is forecast at 3.7%, which would mark a reacceleration from the previous month.

IREN IREN$33.76, which has repurposed from bitcoin mining into AI infrastructure, has secured a multiyear cloud services agreement with artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, according to The Information. IREN shares are up 4% pre-market.
